New Stickle Cottage is perfectly situated for both experienced wild swimming enthusiasts and also first-time novices dipping their toes in this wonderful activity. For example, Blea Tarn provides an awe-inspiring swim and is just a gentle 40-minute stroll (or 15-minute drive), whilst Stickle Tarn, (recently cited as “one of the UK’s best wild swimming spots” by Outdoor Swimmer Magazine) is a more challenging 1-mile hike up the fells, directly behind the cottage. A short 9-minute drive away (or a 1 ½ hour walk) is Loughrigg Tarn. As a tarn with no major rivers feeding into it, this beautiful tarn can offer a very warm swim, all overlooked by the lovely skyline of the Langdale Pikes. Another popular spot, just a 20-minute drive from the cottage is Rydal Water which despite being in one of the busiest areas of the Lake District offers a pleasant feeling of seclusion.

Biking from New Stickle Cottage can be an easy trip up the valley, or a more strenuous adventure up the mountains. There is something suitable for all levels of both mountain bikers and road cyclists directly from the doorstep. The cottage has a secure, lockable, interior garage which has plenty of space for any bike storage required. Helpfully, electric bike hire is available in the National Trust Stickle Ghyll Carpark, (50 m from the cottage), or alternatively there are many companies who will deliver e-bikes directly to New Stickle Cottage, allowing for a range of terrain to be tackled whatever your fitness.

Langdale derives its name from the Old Norse meaning for ‘long valley’ and it’s also probably one of the rockiest valleys in the Lake District.
